Out peak bagging today in the slash lands of north Idaho I came across this on the summit of Sunset Mtn near Clarkia. It's about 75' off the ground and still has the old phone wire dangling from the remains of the platform. I've never seen one in the flesh and it probably won't be standing much longer as this old tree gave up the ghost long ago. A bit of research shows that a site was here in 1919. http://www.firelookout.com/id/sunsetmtn273.html

A crow's nest style lookout was essentially a simple platform built near a tree top that lookouts would climb for a better view of the area.

Very cool find. There were't many trees that tall left after the 1910 Great Burn around that area. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5123247.pdf I am amazed at the number of relics and remnants of former mining and other human activity remaining in that region. I run into stuff all the time while wandering.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

It must have been scary going up there. And I bet it swung a lot in the breeze. Thanks for the photos!

Nice discovery. I'd like to see more of what you've been up to.

For people who like lookouts and former lookout sites, http://www.firelookout.com/id.html This article states that of about 1,000 historic sites in Idaho, some 150 are still standing. http://idahoptv.org/outdoors/shows/eyesoftheforest/fflassociation.cfm An interesting story on Crystal Peak, near Fernwood. The rental lookout is not located on the actual summit and was moved there from another site near Chewelah, Wa to a private parcel on the lower slopes of the mountain. Crystal Peak is, however, the site of a former lookout until the mid-90's. Not sure if paying 200 bucks a night to stay there is on my bucket list though. https://www.ktvb.com/article/news/fire-lookout-in-north-idaho-transformed-into-airbnb/277-591946776 Airbnb listing: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/25687274 puzzlr, check out my flickr site.
