Thursday May 17, 2018 17:11 PDT WDFW NEWS RELEASE Flooding closes some roads, campgrounds in WDFW wildlife areas in Okanogan County Flooding has forced local officials and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to close several roads and campgrounds at three wildlife areas and numerous water access sites in Okanogan County. The closures are intended to protect the public and prevent property damage, said Justin Haug, WDFW Okanogan Lands Operations Manager. Runoff due to snowmelt is causing significant flooding in the area, where water levels are anticipated to remain high for several more weeks. Areas will reopen when conditions improve, he said. Closures or access restrictions are in effect as of May 17 at the following locations in the Sinlahekin, Methow, and Scotch Creek wildlife areas: Sinlahekin: Sinlahekin Road from Reflection Pond to Blue Lake. Fish Lake East, West and Southwest Campground. Sinlahekin Creek Campground. Southeast Forde Lake Campground. Reflection Pond Campground. Conners Lake Campground. Driscoll-Eyhott Island Unit (underwater). Methow: Bear Creek Campground No. 2 (also known as Lower Bear Creek). Cougar Lake Campground. Scotch Creek: Hess Lake Road. Similkameen-Chopaka Unit (mostly underwater) WDFW Water Access Sites along the Okanogan, Methow and Chewuch rivers are also closed. -WDFW-

Thursday May 24, 2018 15:34 PDT Olympic National Park News Release First 5 Miles of Hurricane Ridge Road Under Construction; Closing to Bicycles and Pedestrians on Weekdays PORT ANGELES, WA: After Memorial Day, bicycle and pedestrian traffic will not be permitted on the first five miles of Hurricane Ridge Road from the intersection with Mount Angeles Road to the Heart O’ the Hills entrance station during weekday work hours. Bicyclists and pedestrians who want to travel Hurricane Ridge Road are encouraged to drive to the Heart O’ the Hills campground picnic area to start their trip and avoid the work zone. “Visitor safety during road construction is of utmost importance,” said Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. “We had hoped to have bicycle and pedestrian access during the construction, but the risks are too great to allow it this summer.” Heavy machinery with limited visibility, uneven and unpaved road surfaces, loose gravel, one-lane sections of road, pilot car zones, and lack of guardrails all pose risks during the upcoming construction season. These, combined with the road’s typical mountain characteristics (steep grade, curves, and limited sight distance) have led to the decision to restrict bicyclists from using the lower five-mile section of road during the construction project. Sunday, August 5 is the annual Ride the Hurricane cycling event organized by the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce. The contractor’s work schedule is aimed at completing the necessary work to have the road ready in time for this event. However, after the event the contractor will need to complete additional paving. The park will reopen the road to bicycle and pedestrian traffic on weekdays as soon as possible in late August. The five-month project to rehabilitate the first five miles of Hurricane Ridge Road from the intersection with Mount Angeles Road to the Heart O’ the Hills entrance station began in mid-April. The road work includes utility work, pavement rehabilitation, culvert installation, guardrail installation, and paving. Drivers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions during weekday work hours. Flaggers and pilot cars guide drivers through the active construction areas and temporary traffic signs and devices will be installed for weekend and evening travel as needed. The $6.9 million road rehabilitation project is a partnership between the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration and Washington State contractor Columbia Pacific Construction, Inc. of Woodland. For more information about visiting Olympic National Park, please visit the park website at www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road & Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131 for daily updates. www.nps.gov

* see also ONP news release of 05/24/18 above * Thursday May 24, 2018 15:45 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Lake Crescent Highway 101 Project Update; Lyre River Trailhead for Spruce Railroad Trail Inaccessible Thursday During Paving Paving at Barnes Point Intersection Scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday PORT ANGELES, WA: Over the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend, travelers around Lake Crescent will not encounter any road work or traffic signals. The construction crew is working to get the road ready for two-lane traffic this weekend and will remove the traffic signals to ease traffic congestion for drivers. Road work will resume on Tuesday morning and drivers should expect a half-hour total stop time through the 12-mile project area during weekday work hours. Please watch for flaggers and expect heavy truck traffic through the construction zone. Paving is scheduled for the area around the Lake Crescent Road/Barnes Point intersection for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, the westbound lane at this intersection will be paved and travelers leaving from or headed to Lake Crescent Lodge, NatureBridge or the trailheads should plan ahead and arrive or leave prior to noon or after 3:00 pm. Otherwise, travelers should be prepared for a 30-45 minute delay to enter or exit this area sometime between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm once the paving begins at the intersection. Access to Lake Crescent Lodge, NatureBridge and the trailheads will be unavailable during this 30-45 minute delay to accommodate the paving work at this intersection and to allow the necessary curing time before vehicles can drive over the fresh pavement. Through traffic on Highway 101 on Tuesday and Wednesday will only encounter a delay in this area for alternating single-lane traffic. Until September 21, work is restricted to two hours after sunrise to two hours before sunset. Currently, traveling through the work zone before 7:00 am and after 7:00 pm can help travelers avoid the half-hour delays. Drivers can find updates and a map of the project area with current project information on the park website at http://go.nps.gov/LCHwy101Project. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spruce Railroad Trail On Thursday, May 31 Strider Construction will pave the west end of East Beach Road between the Lyre River Bridge and the Lyre River Trailhead for the Spruce Railroad Trail. There will be no vehicle, pedestrian, or bicycle access to the trailhead until paving is complete. The work is scheduled to be completed by 3:30 pm on May 31 and the road may open to traffic earlier if possible. The Spruce Railroad Trail is currently closed on the western end for one mile beginning at the Camp David Jr. Road Trailhead. The trail is open for use on the eastern end for 2.7 miles—from the Lyre River Trailhead past Devil’s Punchbowl and up to the Daley Rankin Tunnel. This phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2018 and includes bank stabilization, culvert installation, and trail improvements matching the one mile section completed last year from the Lyre River Trailhead to the newly restored McFee Tunnel. The next phase of the project is anticipated to begin in fall 2018. Future project work will include paving the Lyre River Trailhead parking lot, restoring the Daley Rankin Tunnel, and finishing the remaining trail improvements. Paving the length of the trail will occur in the final phase. Completion of the Spruce Railroad Trail project is anticipated in late 2019. The Spruce Railroad Trail improvements are part of a multi-year collaborative project to establish the entire 10 mile length of the trail as a universally accessible, multipurpose trail to be shared by hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and people traveling in wheelchairs. Clallam County and Olympic National Park are jointly funding the project and have contracted with Bruch & Bruch Construction of Port Angeles to complete the work. Federal Highway Administration staff provide construction management and general contract oversight. The Spruce Railroad Trail follows the historic railroad grade of the Spruce Railroad, built in 1918 and abandoned in 1951. When the project is completed in 2019 it will become a signature piece of the 134-mile long Olympic Discovery Trail that will eventually connect Port Townsend to La Push—Puget Sound to the Pacific Ocean. www.nps.gov

Good news I have been wanting to hike up to buck lake lake and some of the surrounding areas now it will be easier. Thanks for the update

Anyone been over Jacks Pass to see how the road work is going or gone up The North Fork towards Blanca TH? I went up by Frog Mtn a couple weeks back as they were suppose to be working that trail but doesn't appear they started it.

Wednesday November 28, 13:46 PST Olympic National Park News Release Emergency Closure on Olympic Hot Springs Road for Flood Damage Repair to River Bank near Madison Falls Parking Area PORT ANGELES, WA: Heavy rains on Monday and Tuesday this week resulted in flooding and river bank erosion on the Elwha River near the Madison Falls parking area on Olympic Hot Springs Road. The Elwha area of Olympic National Park, including the Madison Falls parking area, is closed to all public access at the park boundary while the park road crew completes necessary work to protect the road from being undercut by further erosion. The closure is necessary for the crew to safely complete the repairs over the next two to three weeks. The recent storm resulted in 7-8 inches of rain and increased flows which peaked at roughly 12,000 cfs. The repair is estimated to cost $60,000 for the materials, equipment, and labor. The park is in the planning process for the future of the Olympic Hot Springs Road to address long-term, sustainable access. The first step was to complete an Environmental Assessment (EA) for a geotechnical investigation in order to determine the engineering feasibility of a potential road relocation. This EA was completed and a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was released in late September. The geotechnical investigation and installation of monitoring instruments occurred over the last two months. Initial monitoring results have indicated that relocating the one-mile section of road between Sander’s Creek and the Elwha Ranger Station would be feasible. Monitoring and data collection will continue into next year in order to inform potential road alignment and design. The next step to address long-term access is to analyze the potential road relocation, along with additional alternatives, in a separate EA. Civic engagement for the next EA is anticipated to begin in December 2018. The upcoming EA will analyze various options including a no action (current management) alternative, modifying the current roadway, or relocating it outside the floodplain, one of which will be implemented in 2020-2021. This week’s storm event also resulted in additional road closures across the park. The Upper and Lower Queets Road closed due to high winds and downed trees. The Quinault North Shore Road was closed on Monday near the 900 block due to a downed tree and power lines across the road. Upper Queets Road has now reopened to the campground and North Shore Road was cleared and opened. Lower Queets Road remains closed for additional clearing. For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131. --NPS--

Well instead of fixing the Old Cascade road by Skykomish the County has decided to spend $4.5 million for a turn around. Guess providing public thru access and alternate routes is not high on their list. https://photos.google.com/album/AF1QipO_WCwGBcPtaada-G1-D9P6Z7pjFZ_8y0Y4uEqJ

Good news about Deer Creek road on the MLH...drove by there yesterday and the road is closed and there is heavy equipment, culverts, and a huge pile of boulders that I assume will be used to repair the 3 washed out areas of the road. I was somewhat glad that the road washed out so that the area is not over-used, but in the 3 years since the washout, I have only ventured to the roads end once so...

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
