Most noticeably there would be no plowing at Mt. Rainier. It may vary from Park to Park. This is one of several articles that can be googled. Not all articles reach the same conclusions. https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/422487-under-shutdown-national-parks-to-stay-open-without-staff

Here is more from WTA.org: Note that there will be no plowing, that you will not know if the road to Paradise is open or not and that all USFS road gates will be locked. https://www.wta.org/news/signpost/federal-shutdown-what-it-means-for-washington-hikers

<Politics Removed> Anyway, we're heading up to Rainier maybe early next week and we'll see what we see. And will stop in at Copper Creek Inn for lunch....assuming they're open. I really like that place, and I'll go out of my way to help with the economy up there, I'll stop in at the grocery store in Ashford and make purchases, and also at the store immediately adjacent to the park entrance....etc. However, in the meantime, happy Christmas to ALL, and good grief, why do the government representatives have to squabble like 3rd graders all the time...

Who would have guessed this, of all threads, would turn political? Indeed the dysfunction is depressing, but what's relevant here is the impact to hiking on federal lands... Edit: thanks smile.gif

Let’s keep this focused on hiking impacts. No politics here please.

The cleanups after these shut-downs (now that the parks remain theoretically accessible) must be stupendous. As I commented privately to another member, considering the problems with LNT as it is, having the parks open but the restrooms locked could get ugly.

North Cascades is "my place." Not much affected this time around. In the summer it would mean not being able to get backcountry permits, I don't know if that means chancing it, or just not going. But I'm not doing any backpacking this time of year. I remember the parks closing during a previous shutdown, people reportedly being chased out of roadside pullouts. So while this doesn't have much effect on me, I have a lot of sympathy for the folks this is important to.

I'm pretty sure you could ride a fat bike to the top and back. Fun fact: it's completely legal to ride a bike plastered out of your mind. The state supreme court found that bikes are not vehicles. Also, it's legal to ride a bike on a lot of closed roads, even highway 20 the day before it's opened.

https://www.nps.gov/customcf/webcam/dsp_webcam_image.cfm?id=81B463D4-1DD8-B71B-0BB1FE8364315734 At least it's fun to look at the Paradise east web cam and watch the snow pile up. This morning, a plow went up for some reason as the west view shows a freshly plowed avenue up. Happy Holidays All!! cool.gif

If I recall correctly from previous government shutdowns, plowing the road is considered an essential operation to perform critical paradise maintenance... it's just opening the gate and allowing people to drive on the plowed road that's not essential.

Yep -- if they don't keep the road plowed -- reopening after the shutdown could be problematic -- if the snow depth builds up too much the plows won't be able to remove it and they would need to bring in a backhoe, loader and other equipment to dig it out. But letting the public on to the plowed road during a shutdown without LE on duty wouldn't work -- it's amazing how many people spin out and get stuck on the Longmire to Paradise road during the winter. <Politics Removed>
