I took a quick run up to Kamiak Butte, a local Palouse favorite, to celebrate the New Year. I walked the West End Primitive Trail which adds another mile and couple of hundred feet to the standard loop. There is nothing very primitive nor difficult as the sign implies about the trail and it's a nice, woodsy walk with fewer hikers than the main route. Dogs aren't permitted on this trail but that doesn't mean much to some owners who pay no attention to stinkin' signs.
Microspikes were a necessity but a few were dancing on the icy trail with tennis shoes.
Trail on Kamiak Butte.
Taking this trail for the first time. It's not very primitive at all.
Views north to Steptoe Butte.
The top of the ridge in sight.
Looking toward Moscow.
Summit picnic table.
Looking south before dropping down the trail.
4.75 miles and 1200' of gain.

As usual, enjoyed one of your Eastern Washington TR's. My wife and I hike the "primitive" trail up and down the main trail. Can get busy on special WSU weekends and somewhat comical when the trail ices up! (How about a Green Gulch trip report here on NWH? Would like to see it this time of year.)
