Seems more geared toward street navigation in other countries where you want to pre-load maps. Won't display contour lines without purchase. The free version of Gaia works fine if you view the area you're going to ahead of time so the tiles are cached. Beware of a bug where these tiles can disappear when zooming, requiring an app restart.

Have been using OsmAnd+ (with the topo plugin) for the past year or so, though I still mainly rely on my Garmin Oregon (with both NW Topos and OpenStreetMap) because of 1. battery life, and 2. handling in cold, wet weather.

I also tried Gaia GPS, but their Android version was missing some features (like support for vector maps, which is essential if you don't want to have to fuss with downloading individual maps prior to every hike).

Gaia has the advantage of being able to use multiple map sources, incl USGS, whereas OsmAnd+ is OpenStreetMap only. OpenStreetMap has been getting pretty good for trails over the past few years, but is still lacking in less frequented areas like Eastern Washington. Neither app can display NW Topos.

I use OSMAND with topos and hill shading (which cost a one time extra fee) and find it pretty dang good. The benefit for me is that you don't have to download anything after the first setup, since it is a totally vector map.
