seems like good conditions for it... been cold all week, last sunny day tomorrow before the next snow. Bring a thermos and some skates! I've got some ideas about where to go but no particular lake in mind... so it's not 100% sure about the skating, but in any case it'll be a good hike... Open for input for those of you who have been out recently. I'm thinking somewhere along the 90 corridor, keep the drive short.

well looks like the forecast changed since I posted from 'mostly sunny' to 'chance of snow'

Hi, I am also a fan of ice skating outdoors. Not sure whether there are any good spots in the area, since now most probably harder ice is covered with snow. But if you ever plan on scouting, let me know!

ha! nice timing, the mountains just got four feet of snow in 36 hours so I'm thinking all the alpine lakes may be covered for quite some time... it may be a while before we see conditions allowing skating on alpine lakes again. In the mean time, skiing should be off the hook this next week! I do appreciate the response, I will keep it in mind for when those elusive alpine skating days make a comeback!

passed by lake serene Saturday/Sunday. Noticed the lake was very frozen and wind swept in areas. Might be too rough of a surface to skate on though worth a try and the views are stunning.

I have a cousin in Maine -- she and husband get to skate on a mile and a half long lake two miles from their house. They actually hope that snow holds off until xmas.

ice skating High Sierra lakes http://adventuresportsjournal.com/wild-ice/ Skate skiing Alaskan lakes, talus fields and slopes
I've got fabulous memories of ice skating an open forest that was flooded as a kid, dodging in and out of the trees. I'm in Wisconsin now and skate skiing marshes (with clumps of reeds) has the same rhythm, perhaps a flatland glade skiing. The sheer randomness of the route choices is big fun.

This guy has flow down pat
Genetic jealousy. It's a great time of year to otter watch. They're on top of the ice, often sunbathing, and relatively easy to spot.

Lol.. you rang? I love the idea of ice skating on an alpine lake with a killer view! Preferably a friendly game of shinny. I know a goalie who lives in baring. It has to be a good 15 years since I laced up some skates. Unfortunately when I dug out my bag last winter, rodents had their way, so I just zipped it up and tossed the whole thing. Maybe with the likely uptick in hockey interest coming to the area, I should get back in the game. At the least I need to get some new skates so I can hit the lake's with you! Rumor has it Washington pass can be good early season.
