If logic was all there is to it, nobody would ever hike. Not even just because of lions tigers and bears, or because of the danger of being in a car on public roads, but also because we wouldn't have time given our second jobs. The heart wants what the heart wants, and sometimes that's mountains, sometimes it's inertia, sometimes it's putting them together.
Apples and Tomatoes. Comparing hiking to skiing down K2 is quite a stretch. When are the chances of being killed while hiking or driving to and from the TH, versus the odds of dying skiing down K2?

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I ride my bicycle on roads with traffic-- one driver updating their Facebook status and veering onto the shoulder and I'm dead.

Well if you hike in the Mountain Loop you'll get murdered for sure, but you missed my point. We all have lots of sedentary coworkers who think hiking is just as crazy as you think skiing is.

Yep. I spent a night in the ER and the next day in the ICU because a driver team a red light and knocked me off my bike. We get desensitized to the danger of traffic, but that doesn't mean it's not there. 35,000 people die a year from traffic accidents in this country. But it's harder to get emotional about that kind of danger.

A quick Google search showed that 2 previous climbers died trying to ski down K2 and this guy made it. So the chances of dying are 66.66 %....Russian Roulette is 1 in 6 or 16.66%...so I guess attempting to ski down K2 is not crazy at all, only a 2/3's of those who try have perished. I think we will see that percentage go up as even more lunatics attempt to duplicate his feat. Like now a female will attempt it in order to be the first. But who am I to criticize those who value "Trill Seeking" above their own lives and are obviously not afraid to die? More power to them. up.gif

The chances of dying are 100%, whether you ski K2 or not.

You know what's really dangerous though? Being in the same room with R Kelley.
