I just heard back from NPS-Olympics. They said the Elwha River road will not be rebuilt for AT LEAST 5 YEARS. They hope to rebuild it uphill from present location . Bummer!

Well gosh darn it. Wish it could be sooner.

Yesterday it was clogged with snow. No bike riding up it for a little while. |

Hiking or bike riding the road to get to the Appleton Pass TH is really not that bad. If fact, I had the Hot Springs and the Boulder Creek Campsite completely to my self last summer due to the road closure. Also, during the hike up to Appleton Pass nary a soul was seen. Quite a contrast to how it used to be. Selfishly, I would prefer that they never reopened the road to car traffic and that it would be like the Dosewallips. |

Yea that's a great idea, leaving your expensive electric mtn bike at the trailhead.

hmm.... nuts!
The Elwha River/Goblin Gate/Humes Ranch lollipop hike was always such a nice place to take my non-hiker/older relatives & friends.... (better late than never... cause its not like they're going to make the madison falls parking lot any larger to accommodate more visitors at the gate right?)

I hide it in the woods locked to a tree.
And even if I left in plain view, who hikes 7 miles with bolt cutters to look for bikes to steal? |

A lot of people don't want to steal the whole bike, the parts are valuable and come off with a hex wrench. Ask me how I know. |

Is the road open to motorized vehicles? |

Probably not. But I'll start following trail rules when dog owners do. |

I usually ride an old cheap mountain bike to the TH and hide it in the woods locking it to something immovable. Always has been there when I return. Not sure I would leave an expensive motorized bike at the TH though. |
