Thanks for posting this, Ian. More grist for the ruminating mill about something incomprehensible to most of us mere mortals.

I watched the movie tonight and was white-knuckled for many of the climbing scenes. The most interesting part is trying to comprehend (can't say understand) the motivations and drive of Honnold, and being privy to the emotions regarding what could easily have been his death of the photographers and his friends and girlfriend. As far as the climbing, so little of it looked to be in the realm of possibility that it was hard to relate. The images of El Cap taken from near the top as he finished his climb were otherworldly and beautiful.

A look at the 'Boulder Problem' crux from different perspectives. The first scene in this video clip shows one version of the crux which includes a two handed lunge. The second version, with the blonde, pony-tailed follower, is the upward thumb press/karate kick version, which is the one Alex chose. I don't care how much you rehearse a route, IMO that karate kick version could go either way for anybody, any day of the week.

This is an incredibly morbid thought, but maybe worth considering if you haven't seen this yet. I can't help feeling Alex isn't long for this world. I'm glad I saw the movie (and will see it again), I'm also glad he's alive. I think if he had perished on another climb, Free Solo would be a very different movie, harder and sadder to watch. Go see it now.

Super inspiring to watch this guy climb. Made me become a member a Stones Garden so I can get better.

Good interview today on NPR's "Here and Now" with Honnold and Jimmy Chin: Climb Perfectly or Die Definitely must see the film one more time on the big screen. up.gif

A very good movie of a very compelling story. But the climb itself seemed slow. I've hiked numerous times where the gain has been around the same but did it in well under 4 hours. And his route was pretty direct, without all the switchbacks my hikes have. It's very cool, but unless I'm missing something I'd think it should take him less time, not more.
The footage mainly shows him climbing/down climbing. It does not show him resting in between pitches which he is sure to have done. And rock climbing and hiking are 2 completely different sports. Not a fair comparison.

For what it is worth, I am pretty certain it is Alex on the cover of Issue #0 of Alpinist Magazine...he was much younger then and had just taken a fall when the picture was shot. He looked a bit in shock and had just fractured his humerus, if I recall correctly.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

That's Leo Houlding, with a broken ankle, on Cerro Torre.

If I remember correctly, they did mention in “Free Solo” that the two falls he had during the course of filming were his first significant injuries while climbing.

Leo Holding is on the cover of Alpinist 0: http://www.alpinist.com/doc/ALPSAGA/saga-patagonian-pain-houlding Finally saw the movie on the National Geographic Channel. An amazingly unbelievable feet. I really hope his GF gets deep into his soul. You can't do what he does and not die (sorry). I know he loves feeling perfect; unfortunately nobody is flawless.
