Watched a Golden Eagle eat one last year, it wasn't pretty. But the bird seemed to enjoy the meal.

Not me ! I would have to be starving. Not because they might not be good, but because I just can't imagine it. They're just too cute.
On a related note, I don't see as many as I used to, nor pikas for that matter.

We spoke with an early NW climber about an early picket range traverse. Couldn’t figure out how the took enough foot for the trip. He told us they took a .22 pistol and ate marmots. The names are redacted to protect the insolent.

I've heard that whistle pig was a favorite of early miners.

Ian, Those are great pictures of Herb Crisler. Where did you find them?
When I was a kid we went to the presentations put on by Herb and Lois Crisler.

AKA Rock chucks! Yeah, they can do a lot of damage. But I can't help but appreciate them as they pancake out on the road pavement when the sun comes out. Their pure enjoyment of lazy sunbathing is just a little too close to home, lol.
I was going home one day and spotted an absolutely MONSTER rock chuck just sitting on a guard rail post, his enormous fat belly spilling over 360°, lording over a gorgeous view down to a bend in the Yakima river. At that place and time, he was King Of Everything. Rock on, rock chuck.

Those old duffers were made of different stuff than us. One of those old photos said his pack was 70 lbs - no wonder he thought it would be easier to hunt his food. Like I used to say about some of my elder relations' ethnic delicacies, "Some people will eat anything." And if you're starving, I guess that's so.
Love the Go-Pro marmot. Reminds me of the scene-stealing squirrel in Banff park that went viral some years back.
