Beyond religious significance, this is an architectural marvel, truly sad to see it burn. A few photos, taken in May 2013.

The good news is that the Notre Dame Cathedral has been significantly repaired/rebuilt before, and the French people will most likely rebuild it again; presumably adhering to the original Gothic architecture.
All the leaded/stained glass that was destroyed is a great loss

I sat in front of my computer in tears watching Notre Dame de Paris burn yesterday--I almost didn't get my tax returns mailed.
It appears that an amazing amount did not get destroyed--the Guardian has several good articles and lots of photos. Here are lots of photos mostly taken this morning.
So far, it appears the three rose windows survived. The west one, between the two bell towers, was of course OK, but I'm surprised about the other two. They may find damage when they can get close up. The great organ has survived, but of course probably suffered water damage.
This article lists what was saved.
There are no trees in Europe big enough to replace those enormous oak beams that held up the roof. I suspect they'll have to go to steel, which sure won't be the same, although at least it will be more fire resistant than wood that's seasoned for 800 years.
I'm profoundly thankful that I got to visit the cathedral in 1993 and again in 2001.

What I can't figure out is how they've decided it wasn't arson before they even know if it's safe to let investigators in. Something stinks here given the string of church arsons in France. They must have amazing investigatory superpowers.

Fire started in the construction area in the attic at the base of the steeple (flèche), which would not be accessible to outsiders--unless one of the workers did it. Plus there were security/fire people patrolling up there who would have spotted strangers.

The outcome could have been so much worse; in retrospect, this disaster will help get Notre Dame a proper restoration. I read several NYT articles, and it sounded like there was a ridiculous amt of deferred maintenance and "shoring up" of crumbling parts. Fortunately the lead in the big windows didn't melt. One does wonder, however, to what degree the loss of the roof has de-stabilized the walls, since the weight distribution for which the flying buttresses were designed is now all cattywampus. I think it may take more than five years for a proper restoration.
WillisWall, this photo of yours - "Notre Dame Glass" - isn't Notre Dame - it's Sainte Chapelle. Just happen to know as it's my other most fave French church.

I thought that photo didn't look like Notre Dame but really didn't look at it closely. Sainte-Chapelle does have the most outstanding stained glass of all, and it's mostly windows, so is very light and airy!
Don't forget Chartres, which IMHO is the best of all the Gothic cathedrals. It seems closest to its medieval origins.
Notre Dame de Paris, however, is the quintessential symbol of Paris.

We were there last July enjoying an evening organ concert (no lines that way, uncrowded). So sad to see it damaged so much. We also saw Ste Chappelle and Chartres, two jewels of stained glass. Notre Dame has fantastic flying buttresses though, my favorite anywhere. As a cathedral enthusiast who's seen maybe 100, it's hard to see the most famous damaged so badly.
By the way, one in England (Winchester maybe) had a cool tour of the area between roof and ceiling. It was amazing to see the huge beams, like it's amazing seeing the big trees on the N Fork Sauk trail for instance.

News flash: C'est fantastique!! Notre Dame bees survive the fire
I guess they just got "smoked" - business as usual.

I'm so confused because I thought Europeans raked their churches.

Wow, thanks, WW! I understand that the bronze statues around the spire had been previously removed for renovations. It will be interesting to see what's decided re whether to re-create the spire, since it wasn't part of the original exterior design.

That looks more like Ste. Chappelle. Are you sure you got that one right?
Anyway, I get a sickening feeling about antiquities being destroyed - no matter where they are.
