I've been snoozing. The artist formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds is now just going by Marina (actual name Marina Diamandis) and has a new album about to drop and an upcoming tour. She's had a couple singles this year that I didn't know about until today. Here's one of them.

There's just so much music out there. It's pretty much impossible to discover everything, but I'll keep stumbling around and see what I find. I like bluegrass too. Saw Del McCoury several years ago. He's been making music for a LONG time!

I briefly dabbled in Alt Country in the mid 90s, forgot about it entirely, then rediscovered it a few years ago (well that may not be entirely true, depends on if I include the Old 97s or BR549 as Alt Country or not; but the whole Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt/Wilco/Whiskeytown/Jayhawks/Golden Smog scene). There was some really good stuff in that era. Been streaming a really good Son Volt compilation on Hoopla recently.

First Aid Kit had a great album that came out right at the beginning of 2018, and then in September of that year just casually dropped an EP with several more great songs. Pretty amazing that at 28 and 26 they already have about a decade of recording music and touring behind them.

Sometimes I just have to have a massive Canadian fix ... Lots of anything by Stan Rogers (RIP); two faves:
A smidge of Bruce Cockburn -
Kate & Anna McGarrigle (especially the French stuff)
Of course, anything by Joni, and lots of it:
and a relative newcomer, Kathleen Edwards -

Did somebody say Canadian musicians? (well I already included a few--Dragonette and Wailin' Jennys is 2/3 Canadian)

I guess I've been out of touch w/Canada too long. Except for Sarah McLachlan and the Cowboy Junkies, never heard of these others. But then when it reached the US news that Gord Downie had died, it was the first I'd heard of the "Tragically Hip". frown.gif

Music has gotten so "fragmented." So many different genres and subgenres, niche audiences, radio doesn't play most of this stuff. I wouldn't say any of those bands you haven't heard of are exactly popular.

Rhiannon Giddens Carolina Chocolate Drops Live "Leaving Eden" I recently bought this CD after listening to a good bit of Rhiannon Giddens music: Tomorrow is My Turn. She sings this song more beautifully than Patsy Cline: She's Got You

Great tip, GB. up.gif Just listened to more of her stuff, including the Austin City Limits material. Interesting that part of her background (per Wikipedia) includes studying opera at Oberlin.

Her voice, rhythm, and stage presence are amazing. Folks around here are less likely to know of her. Quite a bit of her music is cultural/historical of the SE and she apparently did sing at the Obama inaugural. I just recently learned of her through a ravingly positive article about her in a recent Smithsonian Magazine. Glad I checked her music out. I'm sure I'll buy another CD - likely of the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

gb - You might also enjoy Ted Hawkins. I forget how I discovered him. I have his Geffen-produced The Next Hundred Years . I never get tired of listening to it.

Surprised I haven't stumbled onto this singer before. She's posted a ton of cover songs on you tube, she's all over one of my favorite genres. Been at it for several years. I don't know what algorithm you tube uses to suggest videos, seems like they should've showed me her several years ago. Better late than never. The best possible compliment I can give this is it almost sounds like the original, and the singer from Within Temptation has an incredible voice.

Take risks not to escape life, but to prevent life from escaping I may not have anyone rocking my world right now but, I don't have anyone messing it up either.
