Not sure why the volunteer is making a big announcement about the location; surely this will direct the criminals to another trailhead, no? The interwebs are not as big as they seem. In any event, I wouldn't be hanging around a trailhead looking for trouble unless I had a metal tool that is unmentionable here. And plenty of small metallic propellants.

I wonder what his "plan of action" for TH watching is. Just to physically be there and visible, which would deter any potential break-in? Hide in the bushes and wait for a "hit", then jump out quickly enough to catch the plate # of the absconding thieves? Surely it would be insane to confront them in the act. A ranger at Verlot once told me (quite a few years ago) that their staff tried staking out the TH parking at Barlow Pass but couldn't catch the miscreants from Darrington they were pretty sure were involved in the rash of break-ins at the time; but they were unlucky w/their timing and were unable to catch anyone in the act.

Yes, that's what he said in some of the follow up comments on his report. The downside is that a thief could easily pretend to be a trailhead volunteer. Nevertheless, good for this guy for taking action, whether or not it ends up being futile.

This kind of action is much appreciated, ovine sensibilities be damned. Two thumbs up! All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. --Edmund Burke

While I applaud his efforts he just posted a picture of him, his car, and cat and if you don't think thieves watch the internet I believe you are mistaken.

How does posting a picture of himself and his car hurt his case?

The motive (aside from gaining some sort of hero status) is probably for LE to notice and say "aw crap, people are doing the vigilante thing, guess we better step up our game". So maybe some good will come of it. Obviously the probability of him catching someone (whatever that means) is incredibly low, given the number of trailheads in the state, frequency of break-ins, and the sneaky nature of criminals. Doubt there's much personal danger though unless he confronts someone carelessly; maybe I'll even volunteer for a shift one of these days.

Having someone hang out at the trailhead is likely plenty to deter thieves during the time they are there. The last thing burglars want is witnesses. But weren't the recent break ins in ONP during Saturday night/Sunday morning?

Lets them know what and who to watch out at the trailhead for. This area, heybrook, necklace, trout lake TH's have had past breaking or vandalism. I appreciate his effort.

I don't think that makes much of a difference. Knowing they're being watched would be enough of a deterrent. Sure, it's not a foolproof plan but it's better than doing nothing IMO.

Maybe hes leaving his car there while he hikes and hes hoping the thieves think hes hiding out watching but hes really not there.

Or hey maybe he drives a different car and wears a disguise. Or hold it maybe he confronts the armed crooks with his walking stick. Lots of speculation going on today

Something like this rigged up on a "bait car" and equipped with remote activation...

If I saw someone sitting in a vehicle, apparently just hanging out at the trailhead and neither starting nor finishing a hike, I would automatically assume it was a thief and get out of there, fast, without asking questions. Some years back, a couple happened upon a trailhead burglary in the Mt. Hood NF. The thief attacked them with a baseball bat, causing severe injuries. Perhaps this volunteer/vigilante stuff is not such a good idea.

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey
