Tired of carrying heavy crocs for camp shoes and river crossers.... Any advice out there as to what is better? I saw some earlier posts suggesting vivobarefoots are popular, but haven`t seen any comparison here to the barefoot running socks?

Vivobarefoot ultras are very light, don't absorb any water and provide a small amount of padding and cut protection compared to nothing. If you are going walk any distance in them, you have to work up to it. I used them on a bike tour as camp/shower shoes and spontaneously went on long walk (several miles) and got blisters on the balls of my feet.

I can't speak to the socks, but the Vivos are the cat's pajamas. Excellent water shoes, excellent camp shoes. Easy to don, thick enough for real protection, don't absorb water, plenty of ventilation, light enough to carry on every trip. I bought a second pair as a hedge against their being discontinued by the mfr, though the originals are still like new after 7 or 8 seasons.

I've used cheap flip-flops in the past, but they would usually get pretty gross after a while with soft mud etc. I'd avoid anything with cloth parts. I'm currently using 1.5 mm neoprene dive (fin) socks. There great for any stream crossing, and some messing around in camp. There cheap, weigh 4.2 ounces in size 12, and can be easily cleaned. If your shoes get soaked; you can wear the fin socks over regular socks and keep your feet dry. There's no padding, but they do protect your feet from cuts.

Thanks all; leaning toward the vivobarefoots. I hear it is best to order a 1/2 size small? Anyone know the difference between the ultra 3 vs ultra 3 finesterre? (color I think?). Nobody out there tried the skinners?

From what I can tell from their website.... finesterre is differently sourced plastic material

Mine are the largest ones they make and they barely fit. That might support your half-size theory, since most shoes of that size are too small for me. But these are not really shoes per se, so it may be that they're sized normally but their flexibility makes a slightly tight pair work okay.

the fake crocs sold at bartells in the summer months have to be 1/2 the weight of real crocs. $6. i stock up yearly when i can find them. they disappear fast and don't last as long as real ones (i do wear them for a lot of harsher environments than they're intended for though...)

We used some cheap water socks from a barrel at Dicks for $8 a pair in the Colombian jungle. Light and cheap and pretty much shot afterwards, but what do you expect?

i hiked Mt. Si in a pair of vibram minimalist toe shoes and i regret it. My feet really hurt the next day from stepping on rocks and what not. I dont recommend it.

I have been looking for, but have never found, closed toe lace up shoes made of the same light material as the upper on Crocs. And a sole of the same material to keep weight down. To me, those would be ideal wading and camp shoes. Closed toes keep the dew off your socks on morning potty runs. Lace up keeps 'em on your feet in fast water.

I scored a pair of the Vivobarefoot Ultra Pure model from another member here a few years back. As noted, great camp shoe. Fairly good for river crossings. (Not as secure as I like, however.) Downside: not a heck of a lot of cushion in the sole. Brutal when carrying a pack across long stretches of gravel bar. Use the "search" function above and you'll find my review in a "camp shoe" thread.
