Last Friday, my brother joined Triciaann, Hiking Partner and me for a trip up to Heather Lake from the Lake Wenatchee approach. I had seen a trip report on WTA earlier in the week showing that the Little Wenatchee River Road gate was open and Heather Lake was looking enticing. The only problem was that when we arrived there, the gate was closed. Thinking quickly, Hiking Partner remembered that we really enjoyed hiking to Twin Lakes in May a couple of years ago and the trailhead was not far from where we were. So off we went up the White River road to our new destination. It was warm and sunny as we began our hike, and right away we were rewarded with Calypso Fairy Slipper Orchids and many trillium.

I took a short side trail to a nice viewpoint up the White River valley.

Our trail passed by the lovely blue green Napeequa River, with views towards the snowy mountains it flows from.

When we crossed into the Glacier Peak Wilderness, we were greeted by the most amazing grove of old growth cedars.

At this point, snow began to cover the trail, and we could hear the roar of Twin Lakes Creek close by. We had warned Triciaann and my brother that the creek crossing was a little gnarly, but totally doable. All we had to do was get across these logs.

After a little pep talk they rallied and made it across. I pretended that I was having fun and followed behind them.

There were a few more challenges as we worked our way up Twin Lakes Creek towards the lakes, but everyone was having a great time.

We were a bit disappointed that there were no fish to be seen in the calm headwaters like last time, maybe we were a few weeks too early.

A gentle breeze greated us as we reached Lower Twin Lake, where we stopped for lunch.

The trail became a bit more messy with blowdowns and snow as we grew closer to Upper Twin Lake.

The fisheries department cabin was in great shape, and my brother imagined what a nice retirement getaway it would make.

When we reached Upper Twin, we lounged on the fish trap dock and watched for trout. Unfortunately, there were none to be seen, but we were content to bask in the sun and enjoy the view across the water towards snow-covered Dirtyface Peak. Everyone agreed that even though we didn’t get to see Heather Lake, Twin Lakes surpassed our expectations and made a great second choice!

That looked like an interesting log crossing with the two logs getting further apart!

Good luck Big Brunyon, it doesn’t look like Twin Lakes Creek will be contributing very many!
True, RolyPoly, it’s much easier on the return.

Nice looking light there. This must be a bumper crop year for lady slippers as I've never seen so many.
