An adult black bear swam from Camano Island to Whidbey Island a couple of weeks ago. After wandering the island for a week he swam across Deception Pass to Fidalgo Island.
Bears are good swimmers and I have seen them cut across a lake to save a long walk around the shore. (as far as I could tell that was why)
They can swim pretty fast too.
Bears are awesome creatures
-------------- Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.
After swimming to Whidbey from Camano and wandering Whidbey for a week "the bear then swam across Deception Pass to Fidalgo Island. From there, he swam to Guemes, Cyprus, Blakely, Orcas, Shaw, San Juan, Lopez and Decatur islands before returning to the mainland."
