You can count on bluegrass musicians to take songs from pretty much any genre and put their own spin on it. I even came up with a phrase for that--"they bluegrassed it." Here's one of probably countless examples of that.

Okay, I'll try to stop for now, but I'm sure I'll be back later. In parting a couple wonderful remakes by the Wailin' Jennys. Actually this brings up another point. Many musicians perform cover tunes in concert. They don't always get around to recording those songs in studio. In this case the Jennys were regularly including these in concert but put them on vinyl eventually.

Speaking of "bluegrassing it", this one will blow your mind:
Then there's this original and its "line dance" version chickenleg.gif chickenleg.gif chickenleg.gif chickenleg.gif

Always thought Kurt wrote the good Courtney songs. But, really, he just told her which ones to cover. Credit in the Straight World: Young Marble Giants 1980

Dylan gave away (sold?) more than he kept is probably not a true statement. But still Sheryl Crow Mississippi 1998
A few years later in my parents car, listening to Dylan's Love and Theft CD, 2001. "Hey Bob Dylan covers my favorite Sheryl Crow song?"

This is one where I much prefer the remake.

Here's another where I was surprised to find out the version I knew wasn't the original.

There's probably a ton of Beatles covers. I really like this one (from a Vancouver, BC band).

Dwight Yoakam popped up earlier. He's had several nice covers.
What better way to do a cover than to get the original artist to duet with you?

Speaking of Gram Parsons (he was a member of the Flying Burrito Brothers), he's probably had quite a few of his tunes covered.
He even covered his own song when Emmylou Harris was in his band. I love the BR549 version though.

Julie Miller isn't a household name, but she and husband Buddy Miller are behind the scenes superstars. Both write and sing, Buddy produces and does session work as a guitarist, and he was in Emmylou's band for a while.

Townes Van Zandt is probably mostly forgotten but you've probably heard some of his songs.
This one has been covered numerous times.
I didn't even realize how much this song has been done, everybody has a version of it.
It just keeps going. Mumford and Sons, Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, Joey+Rory, Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, and on and on. Just based on the list of people who have covered it, I gotta think this is one of the best country love songs ever written.

OlderthanIusedtobe - That's some good sampling of "Cosmic American Music", as Parsons used to say. 30+ years ago I saw Dwight at Bumbershoot, in the opera house. K.D. Lang and the Reclines opened for him. This was back in the day when she was still largely unknown (but not to me, thanks to my Canada connections). Lang was in her punk cowgirl phase. I thought she put on a better show than Dwight did. She was so high energy she made Dwight's performance look like he was bored and just trying to get thru it. Many of my faves in your posts. up.gif up.gif
