Avengers 4. I liked it. It certainly didn't seem Three hours long. I was disappointed in the lack of Captain Marvel participation. She rescues Iron man and delvers him and the ship to Earth and there was zero interaction between her and the Avengers crew! Shouldn't the Avengers group have had a million questions for her? Nothing. Then after she leads them to Thanos and they kill him shes gone until the very end of the film. Also, I would have liked to have seen Peggys face when Steve shows up out of nowhere, instead of just the two of them dancing... Etc etc. All in all, I enjoyed it.

Dammit, I had a long post and I got timed out and lost all of it. I guess I'll do one at a time. I have a free month of Netflix streaming so I've been plowing thru a bunch of movies. I'll start with one I just watched, much better than I expected. "People You May Know." I didn't know anything about it, it had Halston Sage in the thumbnail so that was good enough. A number of things going on but basically about how bizarre the world has become with the saturation of social media, especially for people who grew up without it but now have it as such a central part of their life. Kind of sad and beautiful. I didn't know any of the rest of the cast but I thought they all did well. Highly recommend.

"Anon" was pretty intriguing, sci fi but also noirish. Starring Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried. He's a detective, but police work has gotten really easy because everybody is neurally linked and everything they see and do is recorded, police can tap into feeds, any crime is quickly and easily solved. Except for a few rebels who are outside the system. There is a murder spree going on, the police have to do old school, real detective work to catch the killer. Quite well done I thought.

"Polar" was pretty crazy, kind of a John Wick knock off only bloodier, weirder and kinkier. Starring Mads Mikklesen. Not quite sure I would recommend it.

A couple low budget, slow paced sci fi dramas. One was streaming and one was DVD. "IO," earth is ruined, everybody left the planet except a few stragglers wrestling with metaphysical dilemmas. Essentially a 2 person cast w/ Margaret Qualley (Andi MacDowell's daughter) and Anthony Mackie. Fortunately they were both intriguing and likable. "Prospect" kept my interest but I had higher expectations. I think someone said before it's more of a Western than a sci fi. Also the young lead actress--Sophie Thatcher--did a great job.

"Close" was a solid action thriller but didn't really quite make sense. Sophie Nelisse (the main character from "The Book Thief"--she's grown up a lot since then) is a bratty rich young heiress, Noomi Rapace is a personal protection specialist tasked with guarding her. They end up on the run somewhere in the Middle East with seemingly everybody trying to kidnap or kill them.

"Spectral" is another solid action thriller. Definitely suspend all disbelief at the door and things will go smoothly. U.S. troops in a policing action in Moldova after a regime change that is going poorly. But that backdrop quickly becomes not of primary importance because the soldiers are getting wiped out by some kind of non human hostiles. Some solid character actors in James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood.

Also saw the latest in the "How To Train Your Dragon" series on DVD. Decent finale (hopefully), but the magic is long gone from the first one.

up.gif Spectral is a fun one! Definitely one of Netflix's better original films.

Detective Pikachu was definitely worth seeing - for me it was enjoyable on three levels: the overall interesting and well told story, the entertaining performance by Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu (the rest of the cast is great as well), and the nostalgia factor of seeing Pokemon animated so realistically on the big screen! From age 7 - 12 I couldn't get enough of Pokemon. I never did play the game, or even watch the TV show very much (though I did watch and re-watch all of the movies to an extent that I could just about repeat them word for word even today). Mostly I loved the little creatures themselves, and would spend hours going on imaginary pokemon based adventures, or having epic pokemon battles with my brothers. It's safe to say this influenced my experience watching the Detective Pikachu movie! Even if you didn't grow up with Pokemon, I would recommend Detective Pikachu. There are some truly hilarious scenes, great action sequences, and a surprisingly good story to enjoy. I will say that I was mildly disappointed by the way things turned out, but up until the last 2 minutes the movie is pretty much perfect IMHO, so my little gripe is quite a minor nitpick.

Them That Follow, another SIFF film interesting drama about people in an isolated community that used snake handling as part of their religious practices. Quite tense at the end. up.gif up.gif up.gif up.gif

"Instant Family" recently out on DVD. Really enjoyed it. Funny and also heartfelt and touching. Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne are solid as a couple that decide to adopt thru the foster care system. Instead of one child they end up with 3 siblings, the oldest a teenager. They are in way over their heads and chaos ensues. Isabela Moner as the teenager was really good, she's one to keep an eye on. She sings too, she had a song playing during the end credits.

"Outlaw King" was also among the better made for Netflix movies I've seen. Pretty much picks up where "Braveheart" leaves off after William Wallace is executed. Robert Bruce (played by Chris Pine) keeps trying to unite the Scots but that was close to impossible due to some long and deep seated feuds between some of the clans. Florence Pugh shined as Robert's English wife. Not a huge budget so it didn't feel very epic.

Despite being far removed from being a teenager I still watch some teen comedies and dramas. Most contain a fair bit of awkwardness, even painfully so at times. "The Kissing Booth" I found entertaining and mostly palatable. I've become a fan of Joey King. She plays a girl who gets a late start at dating. Her male bestie and her were born on the same day at the same hospital and their mom's are best friends. They are purely platonic but she starts to develop a crush on his older brother (who has treated her pretty much like a pesky little sister their whole life until now...) and complications ensue.
