I made the long drive up to the far Northeast part of the Pasayten Wilderness to hike out to Horseshoe Basin. The drive was long and I did not start my hike in Saturday until about 4:30. I did the short hike in and setup camp near Louden Lake. Instead of following the trail after Sunny Pass, I cut straight through the middle of the basin. It was pretty soggy with all the small streams and creek running in right now, but a different perspective than following the trail. I was expecting at least some snow, but there was almost none to speak of. The next day I set out and hiked down the Boundary trail for about 4.5 hours before turning around and heading back to camp. There are lots of good campsites along the trail through this section and different meadows and ponds. I had wished I would have kept hiking down further on the first night and gotten an earlier start. After getting back I waited until the start of sunset and went up to the top of Rock Mountain. It had lightly rained the few hours before so I was glad it settled and cleared up enough to enjoy. I hiked out early the next morning to get a head start on the drive back.

Looks like it was nice up there! I’m surprised there wasn’t more snow. Beautiful scenery, thanks!!!

The road is rough - but probably makeable in any car. There were no bugs at all to speak of, but I would bet that will change very quickly very soon with all that water around!

Beautiful area, like the high Colorado rolling meadows but a vertical mile lower so we can breathe!
Some of your pictures hint at the devastation by fire that a significant part of the Pasayten has undergone recently.
