This case has me more worried than the other two (the German and the Stehekin guy). At least they had experience. This kid displayed questionable judgement / knowledge by starting his hike in mid-Oct. I hope he's alright.

Sounds more like a self-harm scenario to me than an actual hike. Sad.

Heartbreaking stuff in the Everett Herald article yesterday (Friday Nov. 2):
Quote: | His family is concerned because Gavin Johnston, 28, has almost no hiking experience and he may be having a mental health crisis.
The weekend before he went missing, Johnston told his parents he’d been talking with Jesus, and that he wanted to quit his new job and be homeless, according to his stepmother, Debora Johnston.
He called his father and surprised him Oct. 17 by saying he was driving to Stevens Pass for a two-month trip south on the Pacific Crest Trail. His father asked if he had permits and if he was going toward I-90.
“I don’t know. I don’t know where I-90 is,” his son answered.
* * *
One hiker reported she may have seen Johnston on Oct. 20, on the Kendall Katwalk Trail, about 75 miles south near Snoqualmie Pass. His family doesn’t believe he could hike that far, in 1½ days, with a giant backpack.
Johnston had bought $1,100 in gear from Cabela’s just before he left. If he brought everything that was missing from his home and car, he would have an enormous 70-pound external-frame backpack, not counting food or water, his stepmother said.
A partial list of his gear — a black North Face coat, two yellow ponchos, a Midland radio — is on a Facebook page, Find Gavin Johnston PCT 2018. |
The best hope may well be that he switched the mode of his homeless journey from backpacking to hitchhiking or hanging out somewhere with better weather.
Vibes to his family.

The sighting at the Katwalk turned out not to be Gavin. There's still no clue which way he went and someone hiking the length from Snoqualmie to Stevens on Oct 28-30 didn't encounter him.

Let's hope he is hanging out in an urban or suburban spot and didn't end up in an impossible situation out in the mountains.

Hey I read on his Facebook page that someone spotted him but that he looked dazed and out of it. Someone else said the same thing they saw someone who looked like him but when they got closer he was gone.

Maybe this kid committed suicide. If they are saying he was acting weird. Maybe he hooked up with a group that travels around. Praying constantly.

Just wanted to give an update to everyone in here. They found Gavins body near Glacier Lake. Thank you all for any support you may have given while he was lost.

Gavin’s maternal grandmother Gloria is in a FB Group I’m in. She said that the ME told her the cause of death was hypothermia. Gavin was definitely experiencing a mental health crisis but it seems suicidality wasn’t a factor of that crisis. But Gavin’s family are VERY devout Catholics so whether that would be an aspect they’d publicly share if it were the case is unclear.

It's a possibility that Gavin had no food with him.
The Glacier Lake where he was found is the one above Surprise Lake.
