Aircrews must get crazy dosage over time...
Quote: |
But one of the most interesting things is due to the fact that the Sun’s magnetic field has weakened, more cosmic rays are now bombarding Earth and some airline flights are seeing doses of radiation up to 73 times that which we’d see at ground level.
For example, a flight from Chicago, IL to Teterboro, NJ which flies at 45,000 feet gets 73.3 times the radiation dosage than a traveler would experience at ground level. A typical commercial flight across the United States gives you about 40x exposure – about the same amount of radiation as a typical dental x-ray. The Chicago-Teterboro flight is almost double that. Frequent air travelers during the solar minimum like we have now would get an even more elevated dose of cosmic rays. |

Well, the solution is obvious! Planes need to fly no more than 400 feet above ground.

Not true. The "70 times more" is not because of the solar minimum. It is always the case, due to the altitude. The solar minimum radiation is only about 40 to 50 percent more than at solar maximum.

It's been over a month with no sunspots. You know what that means. The sun is building up its energy for a massive kill shot. |

Matt...You do realize that most of the cosmic rays the earth receives come from outside of our solar system and not the sun. Supernova explosions create about 90% of the galactic cosmic rays hitting the earth. The GCRs bombard us during the night and the day. The sun's magnetic field serves as a shield to protect us. It is the weakening of this field that has allowed the increase in GCRs. |

This isn't news. Weve known this for 40 years. Ive worked in the commercial nuclear industry, and US nuclear Navy for the last 25 years. We always joked that airline staff received WAY more radiation in their carrier than we who worked in the Nuke industry.

I have been seeing quite a few “Joe in his basement” YouTube videos lately promoting the Grand Solar Minimum as the climate changer anything to draw clicks for cash. Skeptical Science has a collection of articles and videos on the subject.
