Summited Maude last weekend after many years of wanting to.
Beta-wise, we made two mistakes on our route. Initially, when we came up on the first saddle south of Leroy Basin, we followed a Gaia track and crossed OVER the saddle when we should have climbed the ridge to our left. We could even SEE some exposed earth of the trail that way, but followed the damn GPS track instead (and another seemingly confident party). Because of this mistake, we had to climb god-awful scree to regain the ridge and lost a lot of time.
Our second mistake was in the bowl above Upper Ice Lake, where we cut to the left too soon, climbed super steep snow and rock and gained the ridge when it was still alarmingly narrow -- all because we could see a cornice overhanging the intuitive route. When descending, we saw a snow ramp that safely skirted the cornice.
Red is route we took going up. Green is what we took down.
Hindsight is 20-20!
I made a cheesy 5-minute video of the whole climb, available on Youtube here, along with my other cheesy climbing videos:
I was thinking of the Ice Lakes area. Thanks ladies!
It IS the Ice lakes area. You can see Upper Ice lake in the last picture with the Dude. Nice work folks.
