Yup, good shake in Lake Stevens. I filled out the USGS Felt Report just now. 3.7(?) near 3 Lakes between me and Monroe.

Woke me up and that’s usually hard to do...thought my shack was going to collapse. Cats were mia, found one hiding under my bed, scary!

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

What? How did I miss that? I'm just a hop, skip and a jump south.

It seemed really mild. Things shook for a second or so here (Issaquah), then it was over. Hopefully that's all for another 18 years..

Woke me, my daughter-in-law and one of the twins up here in Bellevue. Everyone else slept through the quake. My wife woke up a few minutes later and berated me for being on my phone at 3AM while I was checking the USGS site.

A little reminder to stay stocked up on stuff like Costco TP and non-perishables. Biggest unsolved issue for me is what to do to ensure several weeks of water supply, as I don't want to have to keep rotating thru a case of (gasp!) bottled water. I may end up just using my water filtration system for camping and the hot water tank. Anyone else have ideas? When I was in the Bay area for the first time, I stayed with a woman who rents 1-2 br in her large Berkeley home. Discovered that the m.o. for many homeowners' earthquake readiness in that area is to keep a shed or some other storage device in the yard, stocked with the necessary items.

I moved a wobbly statue off a pedastal in case we had aftershocks. Beyond that nothing. If I was worried about this kind of stuff I'd be investing a bunker.

I used to live in San Francisco when I was younger. My mom had all of her knick knacks velcroed to the shelves. embarassedlaugh.gif embarassedlaugh.gif embarassedlaugh.gif

Take risks not to escape life, but to prevent life from escaping I may not have anyone rocking my world right now but, I don't have anyone messing it up either.

Prior to the broad marketing of bottled water, emergency water was sold in beer cans. No experation date was given. Realistically I think the expiration date of bottled water stored out of direct sunlight is decades, if not centuries. Isn't one of the big environmental concerns with plastic that it breaks down very very slowly?

I'd be less worried about the plastic breaking down than the contents getting yucky. Anything stored too long, be it in aluminum cans, plastic, glass, even if sealed against air, eventually goes bad and spoils, right? I found an old can of diced tomatoes far back in my pantry once that was 2 years past it's expiry date. Can wasn't bulging, so I opened it. The contents didn't make me sick, but had taken on the taste of the can. In an emergency it probably wouldn't be a big deal if the H20 tasted like the bottle, but I wouldn't want to drink it if green slime had formed inside.

This is true for items containing plant or animal tissue. The canning process kills bacteria and other microorganisms that rapidly break down the tissue, but the complex compounds will still break down with time. Canned tomatoes have a particularly short shelf life compared to many other foods as they are highly acidic and corrode the can lining and the can. Bottled or canned water on the other hand has been filtered to remove all impurities, especially stuff like bacteria. So there isn't much in there to biodegrade. Also since water already contains a strongly bonded oxygen atom (H2O) it can't oxidize. So there really isn't much of anything to "spoil" is a sealed bottle of water.
