Yes, that's one of the best photo IDs I've ever seen.
Hats off to you Justus S.!

Looks like an old mountain hemlock with its top missng. Nothing unusual in the Cascades.

I was just up in that area and Justus S saw my pics and referenced this thread. I created this photo comparison. I wasn't in the same spot as the old photo, but I was close to the pic from Justus. but you can clearly see that it was from the same basin SSE of Gunnshy (which is the point at the southern end of Jumpoff Ridge)
Gunn is in the shadows in my pic.
Merchant Peak is not visible in the old photo, but the peak known as "Wing" is visible in the lower right.

It's been two years since Justus S. alerted me to this thread (and 100 years since the original photo was taken).
Just last weekend, I was taking my 15 year old son up to explore the same area I had already been to. And I wanted to try to find the trees from this old photo. I'm convinced I found the spot. I couldn't get it perfect for a couple reasons. Clouds kept rolling in and out and the two main peaks almost always had something obscuring at least one of them. Finding the right angle with a tiny copy of the antique pic on my phone. And the little trees have grown up, which I think forced me backwards so i could get the mountains in frame. Also one of the trees had died and fallen over to the left of frame. But this is what i have to present to you:

Evidence of dead original tree (left side view):

I forgot to mention that there's a tarn right behind the photographer. Which made sense that the explorers would have likely stopped for water. And that gives the shutterbug time to whip out his gear.

Sultan Hiker:
Thanks for wrapping up the 'mystery photo' project. Great effort and picture work.
I think that historical fixations provide some of the best motivators for outings...

Sultan Hiker. Wow, very nice job finding the location and putting in the effort. It's neat to see the hundred year different. Thanks for sharing!

Karen,
Youre still inspiring us with the mystery of the Cascades.
Thank you.
Best.
