Can't read the article without "signing up". I don't "sign up". Spills of raw sewage into Puget Sound are nothing new. The Tatsolo Treatment Plant located just north of the mouth of Sequalitchew Creek (near DuPont, Washington) overflowed quite frequently during heavy rain events, one time shooting fountains of raw sewage out of the four-foot diameter overflow pipes with enough volume to wash the underlayment out from underneath the BNSF rail lines, which closed both the BNSF freight traffic and the Tacoma-to-Portland Amtrack line for several days while repairs were effected. The result of that raw sewage being pumped into the sound (just north of the Nisqually Reach) was what the late John Mount (for whom Mounts Road was named) coined as "the blob" - a large mass of godonlyknowswhat that drifted back and forth with the tide just offshore. As I recall from the underwater photos he had taken by a crew of professional divers, "the blob" was a few hundred feet long, about ten feet high, and about fifty feet wide. Sewage spills from municipal water treatment plants are pretty much business as usual - one of the primary reasons the lower Puyallup River is essentially a gigantic toilet.

You can read it in “ private mode” now although they will soon cut that off like the NYT has and WP is trying to, I use The Guardian

Apparently several of the beaches that were closed due to the spill have been reopened. I'm a bit dubious about jumping in the Sound anytime soon though.

Hmmm...So what I thought was just the detritus baking in the sun at low tide could have been something else.
