Rod: So if the trail destination is far from the PA or Lake Quinault Ranger stations, and there are no self permits at the the particular trailhead, I take it the rangers are probably gonna be chill about seeing you out there w/o a permit??

Probably (although part of their job is to check that hikers do have a permit). Most are really nice, helpful people! There are very few rangers patrolling Park backcountry (like maybe 6 scattered over 600 miles of trails) and most are covering the heavily-used "Quota Areas". In those "Quota Areas", part of their job is to make sure people do have the required campsite reservation on their permit, and try to deal as best they can with those hikers who show up without one (especially when a hiker who does have a campsite reservation finds it already occupied by someone who doesn't! wink.gif ).
