Ventured into the Goat Rocks with our seventeen year old daughter early Saturday morning. Its not often we get just one of our kids all to ourselves AND have them willing agree to traipse off into the wild with us. So, we really wanted to amaze her. And if if there is one thing the Goat Rocks will always do for you - it's amaze:)
Arrived at Snowgrass Flat Trailhead at 7 a.m. and got one of the last 'real' parking spots. Lots of cars - but not tons of people on the trail that early in the morning so it was a lovely hike. Found a sweet spot seven miles in near Old Snowy. There was not as many streams flowing up on the PCT as we have experienced before. But, a decent little trickle was coming down off Old Snowy, maybe a mile from the summit and not far from where we made camp. We had a lovely views of Adams, Helens, Goat Lake and a peek-a-boo view of Rainier.
Day hiked up to where Old Snowy kicks off down to The Knife and ventured that way for a bit as well. Clear skies with a little bit of haze off in the distance. But, the views were amazing and the paths were pristine everywhere we went. We took the alternate route back off The Knife and had to cross some pretty slippery snow fields. There were boot paths across all of them but poles would have made the crossings feel little less sketchy.
Brilliant sunset and epic starry night. Bugs were present but so was a gentle breeze so they were never pesky or annoying. We got most of our bites on the hike out once we were in the woods again.
Hiked out the long way, taking the Lily Basin Trail and passing by Goat Lake and dropping down into the Jordan Basin. There was lots of traffic on the trail Sunday but everyone was actually pretty lovely and seeking the same thing we were. You can't blame the world for longing for the wild.

What a special trip with your daughter! I've got a couple little ones, I hope I can give them an experience like that one day. Looks like a great time!

I went in on Sunday. Camped the first night in Cispus Basin. On Monday I climbed Old Snowy, then dropped down to the knife edge before camping at Goat Lake. Hiked up to Hawkeye Point this morning before heading back to the car. Great area.

We have not been up the Cispus portion of the PCT. That may need to be our next venture out that way. It was such a beautiful weekend to be out there. Glad you got to experience it too:)

It is easy to see why the area is considered one of the top sections on the PCT. It looked like it had some heavy weather yesterday afternoon.
