Being treed by a grizzly and thinking I was safe, seeing the grizzly return holding a beaver.

Sitting by my home fireplace, reading a good book on rainy night gives the illusion of security. One of the best aspects of hiking solo is the blurry backdrop of insecurity it produces. Yeah, we take prudent precautions for the big stuff. But if all the "what ifs" could be masked, and all the comforts of home could be incorporated, why venture out at all? It would be cheaper to just fire up a barbeque in a fenced backyard.

Falling off a cliff? Lightning strike? Tsunami? Anvil dropping onto your head? Coming across a hiker with a broken femur?

Kim, I just had an image of a crazed hunched over unshaven thru-hiker waving a broken shard of femur like a machete in my face.
But yeah, running across someone desperately in need of first aid and not knowing how to administer it would be a bummer.
I'm pretty well legged too, but not so much armed; need to do more pushups and such.

My climbing pal bought his first gear rack from a fellow whose partner went berserk on a climb, chasing people around with his ice ax. They had to subdue the crazed fellow and evacuate him with his hands tied. It was so traumatic, he quit climbing.

I'm corgied. Every bear I see runs away as soon as it sees Al. Happened several times, including last trip.
Give him your food, and nobody gets hurt...
