FWIW in both Lower and Middle Blum the brook trout were removed in 2009 using a piscicide(fish poison). As far as I know the NPS is continuing to monitor to see if the removal was successful but my information is about 5 years out of date.

my trusty ultra-light Curtis pack raft and I got towed around Berdeen by some true hogs, lets hope that piece of water remains as productive... when we were camped between the Blum lakes the brook trout were clearly struggling to survive . Stupidly beautiful pristine area.

That explains why they practically surged out of the water to nab the flies I smashed and tossed in, and that was 52 years ago this month! Hunger hurts!

Hogs in Berdeen? I wouldn't think Berdeen would be the kind of lake to support big fish even if Rotenone had only served to thin the population.

Carla the mountain trend setter! And Matt, you seem to prefer red. Both are great in photos.

poison, eh? sure hope they put signs up so some unsuspecting hikers doesn't fill up the ole water canister...
re:poison - most likely rotenone which is toxic to fish and amphibians, not so much to humans and dissipates quickly from the environment. It's derived from the jicama plant. The Blums had an over-reproducing population of fish which the Park Service removed several years ago. After they were removed, someone illegally introduced brown trout which had to be removed again !
