Phil and I had taken an earlier recon up the W. Fork in May. Far enough to see where we needed to go. BPJ gave some excellent advice.....if only we'd followed it. Got tired of fighting brush so we crossed Miller earlier than we intended. Far side was fine so we angled up; crossed Gouging outflow; hit approx. 3400' where we were supposed to follow a rib up. We were given fair warning. Didn't go far enough and fought hillside, devils club, slide alder, until at last we conquered. It's an interesting meditation to think that 40 years ago many of these "lonely" places were far more accessible and popular than today. Glad we went. Get to circle it on my map. Had hopes of bagging Smith and maybe even Dream....dream on. Too pooped. And besides the lake was very enjoyable. Good swimming, Good fishing, bugs not bad.

I'm thinking Dream lake would be easier from the south, Taylor river trail. But then that would not be as adventurous as from your direction! Since I don't know exactly how much punishment you endured getting to Gouging, I wonder if Smith lake would be a toss-up for approaching either south or north? Beautiful shot of Gouging lake.

Good job! Full immersion in the brush for us. We found rements of a trail from the early days, but couldn't keep on it. Lots of mining history buried in the brush up the Miller.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost

It's a fun area to explore, if a bit bushy.

Dream is best approached from the Taylor River, up the outlet stream when it's largely dry in August/September. Smith can be reached most directly from the Dorothy Lake TH, by travelling up Smith Creek, then up along the outlet (see Cascade Mt trip reports). I've also reached it via a scenic, yet much longer, high route via the North Fork Snoqualmie and Anderson Lake area.

Randy, that Smith creek approach looks awful long and brushy.

Sky, why wouldnt you have gone up from the West fork? Or up from Dream. I know people have dont that and it looks way shorter.

BPJ , I was in search of a cabin up the drainage. First time I Went up early in the spring and tried to locate it then ventured to the old plane wreck and checked out Smith Lakes On a side note when releasing fish might want to grind off barbs. A lot of the fish look fine when released but later perish.

yeah, that fish is likely dead. better kept. I find pinching the barb down flat works fine nice size though! Good work getting to the lake, always wanted to go there.
