If they just hadn't made the PCT route so circuitous people wouldn't be constantly trying to find short cuts

Since the old Commonwealth Basin trail and the PCT intersect, I rarely use the PCT along the lower portion.

The extra length is mostly to skirt private property and additionally to ensure an equestrian grade.

I wonder how much shorter the Commonwealth is?

Ive done it, I just didn't remember.  They created the newer trail to get out of the valley, and out of the snow earlier in the year.

Wow, that's a nasty road!  I always assumed it was in about the same shape as any of the other dirt roads in the area.  There's no way I could ride that with 33s.  Thanks for the report!

I looked over the ridge to see if there was a good route from the pct to Kendall lakes a few months ago. I went over right between the L and D in Wilderness on Toms map above. There was a boot path on the pct side. No sign of one on the Kendall side. I did not go down far.
It looked like pretty easy side hilling over to the knob above the upper lake. Again, I did not go far but could see about 300 yards. Open hillside gave way to scattered trees.
