If planning a PCT hike this Saturday from Rainy Pass be aware around 400 runners will be doing the 21st annual Cutthroat Classic trail race Sat Sept 14.The race starts from Hwy 20 in 6 waves three minutes apart from 8:00 AM to 8:18 AM. Runners leave the PCT in 5.1 miles at Cutthroat Pass and descend 5.6 miles to the Cutthroat Lake TH.
If you hike from Rainy Pass shortly before 8:00 AM anticipate a lot of runner traffic passing you. Will pretty much be normal after 8:30 AM.
If hiking up from Cutthroat Lake the runners will be more spread out between 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM.
I will be running my 20th consecutive. Missed the first.
Crazy Bob
Forgot to mention that school buses will bring the runners from Mazama and park along Hwy 20 on north side shoulder lane around 7:30 AM-7:45 AM. There will be several volunteers/officials using the parking lots but not all that many or for very long so will not greatly affect the parking. Bunch of temporary portacans in the gravel PCT parking lot also.
The race went well during a window between rain showers. I started late at 8:18 AM and met only a few hikers up near Cutthroat Pass with no problems or conflicts. My race was a success winning 70+ AG and, more important, no falls!
