On Sunday some buddies and I went up East Garfield. Craig, Randy, and I tried this peak several months ago but came up short because of fog and being entirely wet. One appreciates the mountain even more when reaching the top the second time. It is approached via the always bone jarring Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road. We were at the top in five hours. The temperature inversion was apparent on the upclimb with warmer temperatures at higher elevations. I found a weather balloon with its instrument attached. The balloon had apparently exploded and a parachute was attached that brought it down softly. It was made by Vaisalla, a firm from Finland. These balloons are sent aloft and transmit data such as upper air temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and direction. They go up to 30 kilometers in altitude.
