Had a nice pretty hike out on Poet Ridge to Bryant Peak yesterday. It had been a long time since I had last walked out toward Poe, and I really wanted to return. Today, it was a little cloudy but, overall, fairly reasonable. I always thought I’d do the loop of Poe, Bryant, and Kodak, but I decided to cut it short and just try an out and back to Bryant. Doing the out and back meant I could go up via Irving Pass and save some elevation gain at the start. I started the day by hiking to the Poe lookout site. When I arrived it was sunny with just a few wispy clouds blowing in from the west. It was a nice start to the day.

Up next was Bryant. It clouded up for most of the traverse over toward Longfellow. The brush was also very wet, and I ended up getting a little wet. The blueberry patches on the traverse over were plentiful, more than you could eat in a lifetime. Below Longfellow the trail drops down(around 400ft) and takes you over toward/around Bryant. I left the trail near the long sliver pond and headed up to the ridgeline. The clouds lifted a bit, and I had some nice views for the hike to Bryant. I followed the ridgeline to just below the summit block cliffs then took a trail around the south side and found a good spot to go straight up to the summit. Bryant is an open summit with two highpoints. After enjoying the summit area, I headed back the way I came.

I ran into a few hunters on the way back to Poe. I think it is high hunt season. On the way down to the car I took a detour and following the way trail to Cockeye. I went up the highpoint then dropped toward the little lake before returning back to the main trail. A few raindrops fell on the way out for about 20min. Overall, it was long day, but I had some really nice fall scenery to enjoy. Fall and blueberries are here.

Yeah, it was nice to see some snow on the higher peaks. Surprisingly the Whittier glacier/snowfield is still hanging in there.

Kitya, I didn't do Longfellow as I had done it before. I think the rough miles is around 14rt for Bryant. Iron, probably gonna take a few years longer than that. It was fairly small 13yrs ago when I did Whittier and the picture still shows some large ice blocks.

Oh, I thought the usual route is just the ridge, that follows Poe, Longfellow, Bryant etc. anyway? What is the way to get to Bryant without Longfellow?

Good stuff. Poet Ridge has some of the prettiest fall colors in Washington.

Hmm, I expected a poem within this trip report. hockeygrin.gif

I think 2 of them are some kind of waxwing. The lowest one on the right is something different.

If you want to get the summit of Longfellow from the main path you have to do a short side scramble. I didn't put in the effort for that.

Thanks for the reminder that that is a great ridge for fall colors!

Birds....the waxwings look 'furry' with backlighting. I think they are cedar waxwings, and the other one is an Oregon junco.

I think they are juveniles.

👍🏻 Good Stuff more color change than on Chelan Ridge around Graham from a few days ago brings back memories of our trip to Whittier so I had to review that TR.
