Waterfall magic at Ricketts Glen State Park (Pennsylvania - Oct 30, 2019)
How can one place have so many fantastic waterfalls?
I knew I was going to be hitting Ricketts Glen a little past peak fall foliage, so didn't have much hope of catching a good color display. Boy, was I wrong! Yes, about two thirds of the trees were bare of leaves, but there was still some great color, in both the upper and lower stories. The waterfalls were thundering, which was another surprise, because we've had quite a dry summer in Pennsylvania. I picked Wednesday as my day to visit, because of the cloudy but otherwise calm conditions, perfect for waterfall photography. Finally, since I was hitting Ricketts Glen past peak fall and in the middle of the week, the place was much less crowded.
I repeat: How can one place have so many fantastic waterfalls?

Stats for the day:
- Hiking/photography time: 9.25hrs
- 5.5mi, 1200ft gain
- Total trip time: 18hrs

No kidding! It's so much fun when the photography options open up a mile into the hike and don't let up until you get back to the car.
I began from the parking lot in the dark, and worked my way down to the east fork of Kitchen Creek, where I was able to take my headlamp off. I scouted the first three waterfalls, then moved back up to the first one, by which time it was bright enough to start taking pictures and for the fun to begin. Usually, I have to hurry and tuck in as many pictures as I can before the sun appears and starts to hit the waterfalls, but on this day, with its wall to wall cloudy-but-dry forecast, I remained relaxed and took my time savoring every waterfall.
The loop hike I did was to work my way down the east fork of Kitchen Creek to its confluence with the west fork, at "Waters Meet" (photo #24), and continue dowstream for another quarter mile past three additional waterfalls. Then retrace my steps to "Waters Meet" and take the west fork of Kitchen Creek back to the car. In all, there were 21 waterfalls on the route, of which 18 are pictured above.
By the way, photos #40 and #41 are of Ganoga Falls, which is the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania (94ft).

Sorry I am late on replying to your post, Gali, but I wanted to thank you for posting your beautiful photos of this amazing place. You were there two weeks after me, and it is interesting to see the changes. Certainly more water than when I was there and still nice color. I personally like waterfall photography "past peak" as it allows you to include fallen leaves on the rock ledges, as you did. I also think going mid-week is the only way to photo this place.
