R.I.P.  They may be easily known to us, but they are still mountains and dangerous.  It appears father and son were NOT together at the time. Im thankful for that.  Rest in peace.

On the radio they said this happened at about 7,500 feet, and that SAR commented that it's never been this icy this early in the season.  It's a freak cold year.  Anybody considering a trip - words to the wise.

It's not so much the cold as the melt-freeze cycles. Leaves everything coated with ice. Microspikes or crampons should certainly be carried if you're heading that way,  and don't wait to put them on.

So sorry to hear about this. What Dave pointed out is so true about current conditions. We went up to Colchuck Lake earlier in the week and encountered several sections on the switchbacks which were a solid sheet of ice, resulting from thawing and then refreezing. Even more concerning, on the way back down later in the afternoon, a very thin layer of ice, barely discernible, had formed on all the rocks and boulders, making travel even more treacherous.
