I had a camera stolen out of a rental car in Argentina. My Allstate Homeowners policy covered it.

Any car, at any trailhead, has the potential. With that said, the farther one has to drive to get to said trailhead without other trailheads on the way (opportunities), the less likely a break-in will be.

Yup. Homeowners - covers your possessions "worldwide" other than Scheduled Fine Arts. Ask how I know - I work in insurance.

I was thinking about this some more. There aren't that many trailheads on the way. One is a campground (West Fork Methow), probably people there all the time. There's the Monument and Lost River trail. I haven't been to the climbing areas in Mazama. On the other hand, the more I think about it, the more comfortable I feel. Cell phone cameras have got so good, you can get great photos in daylight with one, and even print it fairly big. It's night sky photography you really need an SLR and a tripod for. Do I want to carry 10 extra pounds, or spend a night camped up at the pass? There's an astronomy platform at the Meadows CG. Either way I have until spring to figure it out, and it's so dark up there you can't go wrong.
