I wasn't going to report on this short hike, but since just a few TRs emerged from the 3-day weekend, I figured a bit more eye candy wouldn't hurt. We did see a handful of people (and dogs and horses, even a few bikes) during the day, but no one else seemed to be spending the night, despite numerous campsites dotting the area. Sounds like it's more popular in spring and summer (because people like ticks?). It only got down to the upper 30s at night and we had warm sunshine during the day. I took a side trip up the big waterfall at the head of the valley--a short distance further and I would have been at the upper trailhead. No difficulties getting around the lake, for anyone considering a thru-hike. We went up to the Dusty Lake overlook on the way back. Dropping down to it would have been a bit too serious for an 8-year old. If you've been keeping this hike in your back pocket, I think this time of year can be a great time to visit.

I've been meaning to check this one out for years. I've heard of people doing it on gravel bikes, but it seems like a slower (walking) pace is more appropriate. I haven't spent much time in the scablands but it's incredible country.

I agree it's a Jerusalem cricket, aka potato bug. They're apparently not actually crickets, not actually bugs, and not from Jerusalem. I do think they'll eat taters.
