Great article, Randy, thanks for posting it. "Native biscotti" - that's a good one.  In a fashion, the grand prize winning recipe using Pilot bread is very close to a basic meatloaf recipe.  Will have to try that next time I have some ground moose around.  I'll pass on the Pilot bread sundae, though.  gag.gif

Pilot Bread is in fact a form of hardtack, but a bit more edible that others.  It's like an giant and thick round unsalted saltine cracker.
this is the same cracker you got in the old c or k rations. it was in a tin i believe

Wow! Pilot bread! A flashback to Boy Scouts ... 50 years ago! Haven't had any interest since.   shakehead.gif

Good luck finding it locally. You can have my share!    embarassedlaugh.gif

Well, after 50 years, we went back to Bowron Lake Provincial Park. Here's the Trip Report.

With this food topic in mind, I took Sailor Boy Pilot Bread to surprise my teammates. We re-visited the past. Here's the outcome:

Sailor Boy Pilot Bread probably doesn't want to use that photo in advertisements.  smile.gif

Rice cakes are today's answer to yesteryear's pilot bread.  Birdseed.

Finally found some at Hank's in Twisp.  They had six boxes.  No expiration date printed on the box, so I think they'd been there a while.  The bread was just as I remember-- it's not like it goes stale.
