Maybe certain appliances--and even autos--should come with a disposal fee/bond attached to the price tag at time of purchase. We've done it with car batteries for decades.

^ Automotive lead-acid batteries are sold with a "core charge" which is refunded when the old battery is returned, but that's no guarantee that all the old batteries are returned. Quite a few end up tossed into ditches. In spite of that, over 90% of the lead in the U.S. and Canada is currently recycled. Most any battery retailer will buy outright any old battery you can drag in. (Current prices paid range from about $5.00 to $7.00) Not sure if that would necessarily work with stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, or other household appliances, as there simply isn't the same value in the raw materials contained in them, and they're big and bulky and heavy. It is definitely something worth consideration, but the appliance manufacturers would most likely put up the same sort of opposition as Coca-Cola has done with bottle deposits.

If you hire a bargain, independent garbage/junk hauling service, you risk the chance that they are just dumping it anywhere except where they have to pay to dump it.

My suspicion was that it was the “independent contractors” working for big box stores which offered free instillation and hauling away of the old appliances.
Never occurred to me that some of this problem is with the hauling services. Hopefully at least in the city this isn't happening.

I couldn't help notice that somebody's rifle/pistol was definitely pulling to the right as they tried to shoot in the O on a road sign. O's and the deer and cow pictures are prime targets. Actually, I was pleased to see no litter and a new sign threatening a $1000 fine for going off road on ATVs. I was up enjoying the sun on a walk by the upper lake at Conconully.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities
