My son sent me a pic of tracks he saw yesterday up on/near White Pass, wondering if they are wolf, coyote, or domestic dog. He saw two sets of tracks, wandering on off trail, no "people" tracks. New snow overnight and these were the only tracks he saw. I guessed coyote, or wolf. Opinions?

Coyote. Based mainly on size, but also location.

did you shoot the image down to somebody at WDFW? location makes perfect sense: White Pass area would be only 50-60 miles south of the nearest pack on the Teanaway.

No, I didn't think of it, and neither did my son. I'll mention it to him. Coyote was my first guess based upon size (as Bedivere suggested), and that there were only two. I would guess that if it were wolf, there would likely have been several tracks. I think coyotes are more skittish, but either way, I don't think I'd care to run into either canine alone if they were "on the hunt". He didn't either, and thought it was time to go back to the car. He's just getting into hiking alone in the woods, so more experience may have given him confidence that there was really not likely a problem, or that it was a good idea to turn back. I don't know for certain, so I said the "turn back" idea was best. And, as long as we're on the topic of wildlife, yesterday my grandson sent me a note to tell me that he and a fishing buddy had a "cougar encounter" Saturday. They were somewhere west of Olympia, walking through high grass looking for a better fishing spot when they heard a noise behind them. Turned around and saw a cougar in the grass about 15' away! Yeah, it took off and they went back to the truck. Good grief!

‘Yote. No reason to fear them...they want less to do with people than any of us do with them. Exceptionally wary, particularly if they’ve ever been shot at it.

Yeah, my only experience with them here is that you can't get close to 'em if you want to. I've tried a time or two. However, I'd be wary if there were two of them (hungry) and one of me.

Which White Pass? Those seem small for a wolf. Wolf tracks have been seen south of Packwood, but since no wildlife specialists were in the group the tracks don't count. There were also reports at the same time of a wolf in the area. But once again, not by official wildlife experts and no pictures. We assumed the tracks were wolf as it was 5 miles from the highway, deep fresh snow, and no human or vehicle tracks. Plowing in was taking place at the time.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

I thought so also. However, I've never seen a wolf or its tracks, so it was only a guess on my part. I've only ever seen a cougar or cougar tracks, and that was quite interesting to me. Thanks all for the opinions. up.gif

I hope you were not wearing a Little Red Riding Hood costume. By the way, just what is a Riding Hood? That question, after all these years of life, just came to mind.

My guess is that it's a hooded cloak that was commonly used when riding horses.
