Happy to help when needed, but I'd rather give people a heads-up and avoid the costly accidents and possible injuries. I've noticed most involved have been from the westside and they understandably assume that if it's sunny and well above freezing, all is good - especially on the eastside - so this is a tricky one. Today's "victims" were L'worth locals and lucky to get away unharmed - thanks to a lot of deployed airbags. I just started carrying tow straps and shackles for the season. When I got out to help the women today, I could barely walk on the ashphalt it was so slick

Downhill - thanks for that information. Two friends who live in Leavenworth texted me they were going to hike the 4th of July trail to the lookout today. I sent them your post about the icy roads. This afternoon they reported in and thanked me for the heads up. It was indeed icy as you described, both going in this morning and coming back out this afternoon. They survived the drive and the hike.

Happy to help up.gif After a few weeks of warmer than normal temps, the cold, clear weather is back this week which means heavy frost on the Icicle road in the shaded spots. Nighttime temps in the valley are 19-25 and daytime of 30-33 so nothing is melting off that's not in the sun - shady corners are very slick!

I saw on FB the road up the Sol Duc is closed for winter. Is this an annual closure? Best.

Keep Calm and Carry On? Heck No. Stay Excited and Get Outside!

From Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest Facebook page: "A gravel slide has occurred restricting traffic 7.2 miles from Valley Camp on the Middle Fork Road (FSR 56). King County Roads Division notified and coned off road to stop traffic at CCC trail. The cause was a creek uphill of slide had diverted and caused massive runoff across road. The slope is currently unstable with numerous trees leaning over slide area. King County on scene suggested road could give way at any time. Advised against foot and or ATV travel through slide." Here's a recent WTA blog post about this very thing. This year has been particularly destructive it seems. ~z

Due to severe flooding, bridge wash outs, and rock/mud slides, the Tucannon river road 9233 is closed just after the turnoff to the Tucannon fish hatchery. According to a Wooten Wildlife Area official, the plan is to open the road to camp Wooten as soon as they can. It is unknown what the Forest Service will do to open road 47. (Doesn't look too good...) At the present time no one is allowed access to Panjab, Tucannon and Meadow creek trails.

Makah Tribe closes Neah Bay to non-residents by Peninsula Daily News NEAH BAY — The Makah Tribe is shutting down to outsiders. As of Monday and until further notice, businesses and properties owned by the Makah Tribe will limit or close public access, in response to the confirmed person-to-person spread of COVID-19 in Washington state, the tribe said on its website at makah.com on Friday. The Makah Cultural and Research Center, Hobuck Beach Resort and The Cape Resort will be closed to customers until further notice, the tribe said. The Warmhouse Restaurant will remain open for take-out orders only. The Shi Shi Trail, Cape Flattery Trail and Third Beach Trail commonly used for surfing will remain open to Makah Tribal members only. They will be closed to the general public until further notice. Also closed to any but Neah Bay residents will be the boat launch at Big Salmon. “The Makah Tribal Council, after careful consideration, has determined the need to implement appropriate measures to protect the health, safety and welfare of the Makah people and the Neah Bay community. The rapid changes with regard to COVID-19 are a public health concern and the Makah Tribe is carefully monitoring this outbreak and coordinating with tribal, county and state emergency management agencies as the situation develops,” the tribe said on its website. For updates, see www.makah.com, www.hobuckbeachresort.com or Hobuck Beach Resort Facebook. Peninsula Daily News article

Beckler Peak road # 6066 Wood cutter opening road. Cleared only 1.5 miles.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost

That's going to take a lot of wood permits for that wood cutter to open that road
