Oooh, an elephant rock. There's one that looks a bit like an Elephant on the ridge above Circle Lake. We camped at "Elephant Head Lake" in the Winds last year, but I didn't think the mountain next to the lake, which was also called "Elephant Head" really looked a lot like an Elephant. uhh.gif I want to go there again, in the fall. More Larches than just about anywhere I've been. That same picture on a sunny day in october would be great!

Valley of Fire seems to have a bunch of elephant-like rocks scattered about. The weirdness of sandstone wind-and-water erosion.

Sounds like a good plan.

Seven us went hiking/snowshoeing up the Maple Pass trail clockwise on Sunday. The slow going in snow kept us from reaching the pass, but we had a lovely day in beautiful weather once we broke out of the clouds.

A few more shots from my road trip through part of the SW a year+ ago (what can I say, this weather is good for cleaning out files and revisiting some that I'd ignored last year :-) ). These are both from Valley of the Gods, which is a very cool part of the area that was briefly part of the Bear's Ears National Monument (but was removed by the current administration). It's a cool little sibling to the more notorious Monument Valley to the SE of VotG. And if you go, there's plenty of options for boondock camping along the road and spurs off of it. In fact, in the big version of the second photo (not the expanded version here, but on my computer monitor at full camera resolution...), you can make out a nice multi-tent-and-camper camp set up in front of the conical butte on the left - it looked like a nice position for taking in the views you can't see behind my camera position.

I have "always" been jealous of people who can take photos like these. Really impressive. Several times in my life I have either borrowed or bought cameras to take outdoor shots (nothing too fancy). Yet the results look like the pictures were taken by a child. Not bad, just so so. I liken the skill to that of playing a musical instrument. I have tried that many times too. Yet 3 of my children are professional musicians. A tip of the hat to those who share such pictures.
