Enabling farmers to listen for water-stressed plants could “open a new direction in the field of precision agriculture”, the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly important as climate change exposes more areas to drought.
“The suggestion that the sounds that drought-stressed plants make could be used in precision agriculture seems feasible if it is not too costly to set up the recording in a field situation,” says Anne Visscher at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK.

Hmmm. Modern extensions of the work of late 19th century scientist J. Chandra Bose? He developed some instruments to measure plant responses to stimuli.
For a publication that associates itself with science, the article - and the link in it, especially - uses adjectives that veer surprisingly close to confounding the phenomena with sentience. The "New Age" contingent really ran with that in the 70's, like they did with certain concepts from particle physics. I'm reminded of The Secret Life of Plants.
Magical thinking aside, the science of these phenomena make them no less "magical", eh? And we got some wonderful creativity out of the confusion. There was a documentary film by the same name (now a cult classic, never released on tape or DVD) and the producers even got Stevie Wonder to do the soundtrack. My fave tunes are below. The one with the dance sequence actually is a clip from the film.
