Would banning dogs on the trails in the ALW north of I-90 change your hiking habits?
If I can't take my dog, I would go hike somewhere that I could take him/her

I would leave fido or fluffy at home and go hike there anyway

More trails would be a good thing. Spread the crowding and impact. Maybe the Change Creek trail could become official. The Iron Horse / John Wayne / Palouse to Cascades trail is pretty. Almost everyone on that trail is either a cyclist, a climber, or a bear. There are even camps along the trail, one with a waterfall. More side trails from the IHT could be nice. It's not in the wilderness, but so what? The population is growing, more people hike, nobody likes trails being extremely crowded. I don't think the place is being loved to death.

All of the trails mentioned except Ira Spring Trail are outside ALWA most are on WA State land if that makes a difference.

Speaking of thread drift, I wouldn't underestimate the mozzie: https://www.cdc.gov/globalhealth/stories/world-deadliest-animal.html

If the goal is spreading around the impact from super popular trails like Snow Lake and reducing impact on the ALW itself -- having more trails outside the wilderness boundaries is a good thing. e.g. How much more crowded would the Granite Mtn trail be without Mailbox ?

Just an observation here: I found Randy's comment about people expecting to find solitude an hour's drive away from a metropolitan area with a population of two million people hilarious. Some might consider how really good we have it here when you look at other places around the planet: the conga line leading up the southeast ridge of Everest last year, or the hundreds of people lined up on Mt. Fuji in Japan, or Machu Picchu in Peru, or the public beaches seen in the videos of one of our own members, walkingnatureworld. If it's "solitude" you're after, you're going to have to drive a little farther. Stop whining already. rant.gif

Or just be a little less (or more?) selective with your choice of trails. Plenty of reasonable solitude to be found on the I-90 corridor from the Issaquah Alps to east of the pass if you avoid the more popular options, especially the Facebook and Instafame "look at me" hikes.

Here's the deal. I've found solitude just 5 miles from highway 2 in the vicinity of Steven's pass. On a july weekend!! Off a major trailhead!! At a lake!!! What you have to understand here is the creativity involved. Which wasn't much, just more than the competition 'pparently....

FWIW: Before it was phased out Instagram's photo map was a useful way of identifying where the hordes are congregating. The GaiaGPS "public tracks" feature let's you know where people are going. I find that even at hyper popular locations it requires only a marginal amount of extra effort to separate one's self from the bulk of the crowd. This the upside of "Instagram Hikers" whose goal to take the same selfie that many others have before. You can still get that selfie, but walk another half mile and you leave those folks behind.
