Treeswarper,
Thank you for reviewing of your LL Bean sleeping bag, I have to admit, the bag looks pretty impressive...

Wow, I think it is 15 years old so that explains why it seems extra expensive now.
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

I am pretty new here but it seems like this should be in the Gear forum.
If I wanted to look it up in a few months that is where I would look.

Quilt is the way to go. I switched some years ago and I don't think I would switch back. Really love my 20 degree.
Quilt vs. Bag
I have an Enlightened Equipment made in the USA which is great.

+1 for Enlightened Equpiment quilts. I have 2. A 20° for 3 seasons (what can I say - I sleep cold) and in winter, I clip a 40° one to it and the combo gives me the equivalent of a 0° quilt. As a side sleeper, I can say I’ll never willingly go back to a bag.

I think a 20F quilt is ideal for around here for three+ season use.

Just as a side bar comment. I own two bags, one Western Mountaineering and a Feathered Friends. I have found the down in WM to be far superior to FF. However, that is not say FF is not a quality product. Buying USA MADE is a #1 priority for me. I just prefer the WM. Also came across and elderly Gear Head last year up at the Rainy Pass TH who had the same observation. That LL Bean Bag sounds like a good choice for you with the price tag. Speaking again for myself; If I design another sleeping system I will be going with quilt from a "Home Grown Shop." Good Luck and Stay Warm with your choice.

Much like the boots versus trail runners debate, imo it depends upon the conditions and personal preference.
I would not take a quilt for a backpacking trip to the North Cascades at 5-6k feet at ANY time of the year...lowland destinations with a fair weather forecast? Sure, why not?
