just looking for some recommendations on mainly compression editing software that would be free to use (indefinitely). if it can trim, then that's a bonus.
I use a simple video tool called "Shave" to trim, combine, and split videos all the time, probably every week. Once you learn a few keyboard shortcuts you can do most of the editing without touching the mouse very efficiently.
It can export videos with different settings (e.g. compression by lowering the resolution), but if I'm going to do actual video editing I usually go to Final Cut Pro instead of this tool. Shave doesn't do any effects like dissolves between clips.
Downside: It's only available on a Mac and only through the App Store.

Shave is a simple, quick and light video editor for Apple's OSX. It allows you to quickly and easily edit together videos. Perfect for trimming and tightening your iPhone videos before uploading to your favorite social media site, batch conversion of video for use on the web, cut/chop/splice video before importing into Final Cut Pro or After Effects, extract your favorite scenes from your favorite movies easily and quickly, edit your screencasts with the quickness and then directly upload to YouTube, mash ups ... and more!
