Went up in between rain squalls in the late afternoon. Saw five-six other groups and hiked out at dusk with a guy who carried a full-sized canopy and sat under it at Jay Lake all day.
One of my favorites:
Small Falls, Wallace Falls State Park 1/24/20
The North Fork Wallace was tumultuous!

The sun appeared briefly:

There was even a little rainbow at Middle Falls:

Beautiful! Nice shots NA....fyi, WTA will soon be building more structures there to make some spots more walkable.

I just added a little video of the Wallace River from the valley overlook. It took Flickr all night to finish uploading.
Thanks to WTA for their efforts, lookout bob. The trails really took a beating after the last series of storms!

I know it looks like a long exposure, Cyclopath, but it’s actually not. The tremendous amount of spray and mist makes it look that way though. I used my Moment 18mm with my iPhone 8 for that one and also the video.

Wallace Falls was one of my first hikes in WA in the early 80's...the second time I hiked up there I dragged my wife (now X) along who was 7-8 months pregnant, we took the steeper (east) trail in and and the western (old RR grade) longer trail on the way out. I kept telling her that it was an "easy" trail, but as I recall, she wasn't buying it. We were like 23 at the time, haven't been up there since.

Wallace Falls never disappoints, your pictures are beautiful Nancy Ann. I don't know if I would carry a canopy up to Jay but it is definitely the best place to hang out if you want to avoid crowds.
You don't find yourself standing at the top of a mountain without having started out in the valley.

Thanks, Snuffy! I’ve actually never bothered to go to Jay Lake because everyone says it’s not worth it, but I guess that’s what makes it so appealing to a guy who just wants to sit by himself under a canopy in the rain all day.

Why am I not surprised?
You are one of my many friends whose spouse, child or partner refuses to hike with them anymore due to an unpleasant experience on their final hike.
There should be a thread in Trail Talk discussing this...

Nice! I was watching the weather, and that window opening was unexpected. Most of the rain shifted just east and south. I just did a boring dog walk with good views.

Yea, I had another female hiking partner I met on FB...I thought it would be a good idea to spend the night at Mt Forgotten Meadows. We spent the night there but I the way down she barely made it, wanted me to leave her about halfway back and I had to carry both our heavy packs down while she took baby steps, not fun. She never went hiking with me again either...hmmm, wonder why I'm single/

I actually like Jay Lake a lot, especially during the winter with snow. It does not have a great shoreline so that's why folks don't tend to visit but there are some great little points along the way for pictures and with snow the brush around the lake is laid down making it easier to see across the water. It has a few picnic benches and campsites, too. Plus, no one ever goes so you have it to yourself!
