According to Sikorsky, this type of helicopter set a speed record of 214 mph over a 500 km course. It could have easily exceeded that speed in a controled dive. Pilot may have thought that was ok given an erroneous assumption that there were no obsticles in the flight path. Report says they almost cleared the hill. In a random crash odds are you wouldn't hit near relatively scarce crest terrain. Time will tell.
