Today we enjoyed a sunny snowshoe trip to Johnson and Malcolm Mountains in the Teanaway. The route we selected involved a 4.25 mile road walk on Jungle Creek Road, from the Twentynine Pines CG to the notch between Teanaway Butte and Johnson Peak. From there we followed ridges up and over Johnson to Malcolm. Travel conditions were marginal; breakable crust for the majority of the road portion, firm snow most of the way between Johnson and Malcolm (crampons and ice axes useful), and deep trailbreaking through wind drifted powder on the final ridge to Malcolm. This trip reaffirmed my hatred for snowshoes, especially in the ankle-destroying breakable crust, but it was a great day nonetheless. We felt this route was scenic and fairly well-protected from avalanche risk. It is a long day though, about 16 miles and 4200' gain round-trip with all the ups and downs, but well worth it for the views.

Great work. Looks beautiful and cold. A 4.5 mile road walk in snowshoes just to get started is showing some dedication this time of year. ~z

Great views, Jake. Thanks for posting. If the title was "Johnson, Malcolm, and Robinson" we might think we were reading about a law firm. hmmm.gif

My feet aren't too happy about the 16 miles in mountaineering boots but it was a great trip. Plus, now I'm up to 18/20 on that bizarro Mountaineers Teanaway 20 list (which includes some peaks that IMO aren't in the teanaways and does not include some that are).
